What is Organic Farming?
Organic farming is agricultural production without
the use of synthetic chemicals or genetically modified
organisms. Soil is central to this system of farming with s
oil health critical for producing wholesome products without
the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides.
Weeds and pests are controlled using environmentally sound
practices that protect our community's health. To be
labeled "organic," tree fruit must meet special requirements
established by the US Department of Agriculture. The fruit
must have been grown without: conventional pesticides, fertilizers
made from synthetic ingredients, sewer sludge fertilizers,
genetic engineering or irradiation. The land must be free of all
prohibited substances for three years prior to harvest of "organic" fruit.
It costs farmers more to grow fruit organically, and organic orchards
are inspected each year by state agricultural departments.

Why Eat Organic Fruit?
Some people think organic fruit tastes better than conventionally grown fruit.
Our experience is that sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. As far as
appearance, you will see more variation in the same fruit, and some occasional
superficial blemishes. This is good news: organic fruit is not "engineered" food.
Perhaps most important are the environmental and health considerations. You know
that you are not contributing to introducing synthetic chemicals into the environment,
including the air and water supply. Also, some studies have shown that fresh organic
fruit may contain on average 50% more vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other
micro-nutrients than intensively farmed produce. Moreover, choosing organic is the
only practical way to avoid eating genetically modified (GM) food.
