Artist Andrej Urem doesn't really make "candles" in his Gowanus, Brooklyn studio. The Croatian born poet and sculptor instead upends utilitarian ideas and methods of candle making by creating gorgeous, livable works of art utilizing a mixture of 3-D technology and age-old techniques of hand pouring soy wax and beeswax.
Urem's candles are inspired by Platonic forms and each one is named after a state of energy or certain psychological representations, both masculine and feminine -- Hara, Rose and Lace. Each candle burns for 60 hours and has a unique core that allows the structure of the candles to stay intact while allowing light to shine through like a warm, glowing lamp.
Andrej Urem also applied his artist's sensibility to designing the frame that protects his beautiful candles. The packaging that houses each candle is a revolutionary light-weight concrete that is a gorgeous form unto itself.
We think his exquisite candles are perfect in every sense, but when asked about the idea of "perfection," Urem told us, "To write a poem or draw a picture, or make a candle, you need a whole life that is behind you to make that thing possible. The perfection appears when you burn that little fragile container of light as a reminder that all the beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
We behold a great love for he and these three.
